Coronation Street Lesbians: No Longer a Secret

Remember Sophie (Brooke Vincent) and Sian (Sacha Parkinson) the Corrie teenage lesbians? Well, their little secret has come out and their pretty pink bubble has finally burst! The cat, or pussy (as some might call it) is out of the bag.

Remember Sophie (Brooke Vincent) and Sian (Sacha Parkinson) the Corrie teenage lesbians?

Well, their little secret has come out and their pretty pink bubble has finally burst! The cat, or pussy (as some might call it) is out of the bag.

Things haven’t gone smoothly for our pair of young lesbians. A couple of weeks back Sophie’s parents forbade the girls from seeing each other. Why? Because Sophie lied to them saying they were visiting Sian’s parents but they sneaked off to a music festival. What were they to do? They joined the Christian Choir.

There have been some deliciously comic situations with the girls grabbing a few minutes wherever they could just to see each other. This culminated in their being called in to help out with a spot of babysitting when neighbor Claire is urgently away.

Claire returns unexpectedly and silently watches the girls snogging on the sofa! Good old Claire doesn’t say a word . . . and probably never would have but, at the wedding of Roy and Hayley –Hayley is the show’s trans character -- Sophie’s sharp-tongued mother Sally goads Claire to breaking point and Claire freely vomits the information to all and sundry.

Sally insists, ‘My daughter is not a lesbian!’ Claire is in tears and the girls want the ground to open up and swallow them.

(continued)

Wake up and smell the coffee Sally! Your daughter Sophie’s tongue has been tickling Sian’s tonsils for months now.

And, that’s not all. The Christian Choir, including Sophie and Sian, were booked to sing at Hayley and Roy’s wedding. I fully expected to hear them sing ‘I Am What I Am’ as bride Hayley walked in to take her nuptials but no. They sang ‘Lean on Me.’ Quite fitting really.

Of course Sally is convinced that Claire is a liar. She shepherds her husband and the girls out of the wedding reception and back to the family home. After telling the girls that no-one will believe Claire because everyone knows the girls ‘are normal’ she takes Sian home in her car. Oh contraire Sally!

So, Sophie and her dad are home alone, and after a false start, Sophie spills the beans and finally plucks up the courage to tell him. ‘Dad . . . Sian and I are together.’

I can’t wait to see Sally’s reaction!

I have to congratulate the writers of Coronation Street for doing a brilliant job with this episode and producing a fantastic mix of laughter and tears. They pulled together an amazingly strong and cleverly mixed story line that included the transgender wedding, a Christian Choir, and two lesbian teenagers.
