One doctor is breaking stereotypes as a lesbian resident at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital. Kelly Wright, M.D., is one of the Ob-Gyn residents featured on Boston Med, a reality show on ABC, which chronicles "real-life" doctors, following the success of shows such as Grey's Anatomy.
Wright opened up to ABC News in a recent interview, discussing some of her fears about being a doctor, and some reservations she has about her personal life. Wright finds similarities between relationships and her profession.
"You think you've built something great and then in a second, it can all be gone," she told ABC News.
On the last episode of Boston Med, Wright and her girlfriend broke up after she could not dedicate necessary time, due to her residency. She also discovered her girlfriend was cheating on her.
Despite the threats of loneliness, Wright decided to stick with her profession. Wright, who went to school at Texas A&M, had a mission to help people, and knew she would find a relationship that fit that mission.
Wright not only battled finding a woman who fit in with her career, but faced assumptions people make about her as a lesbian woman.
"I could say I'm a Christian. Sometimes vote red," Wright said in an ABC profile. "I don't perform abortions and I'm gay and I do obstetrics and gynecology for my job. There's so many different things that make up me and it's fun to negate the stereotypes if people have them.”
Wright eventually found love on Match.com, and now pursues her career dreams with the support of a Texas woman she met a year after her break-up.
