Broad Sheet: Sofia's Boobs, SuicideGirls, and Lots of Love Premiere

In this, our newest recurring feature, you'll get you the low-down on all the can't-miss, female-centric entertainment highlights coming up this week. Just think of it as our list of Totally Awesome Things That Will Remind You Why It Rocks To Be A Woman. Don't worry, you can thank us later.

10. Hotness: Sofia Vergara in Machete Kills

OK, the movie doesn’t come out until Oct. 11, so this is a week early, but honestly after seeing Modern Family star Sofia Vergara sporting machine guns atop her lady bits, I can hardly think of anything else. Machete Kills has tons of queer ladies in it: Amber Heard, newly-out Michelle Rodriguez, Lady Gaga (who sings the title track), and of course Vergara, who gets honorary status because she’s a big LGBT supporter and because I’d like to do her. And yes, you have to sit through a film with Mel Gibson but (a) I’m fairly sure he’s a bad guy, and (b) bad guys don’t fare well when Machete is around. - Diane Anderson-Minshall

9. Film: The Lulu Sessions

Filmmaker S. Casper Wong calls her film a “modern day Thelma and Louise meets Tuesdays with Morrie” and it’s meant to prod all of us to “wonder what our own final adventure will look like. And with whom will we be sharing this last ride.” Director Wong lets us see one woman’s final days in The LuLu Sessions, a raw and deeply personal documentary about the last 15 months of the larger-than-life LuLu (the hilariously profane, chain smoking Dr. Louise Nutter, a genius cancer research scientist who is dying of breast cancer). And we see them through the eyes of someone who couldn’t be more different — Wong, her best friend and ex-something. It’s a beautifully stark testimony about the tenacity of love and enduring friendship, and it offers a sort of raw, honest, and, yes, funny, look at mortality.

The film will be available from Women Make Movies on DVD and a VOD sneak-preview (for month of October only) as well as special screening events with panel discussions in New York City (Oct. 21), Los Angeles (Oct. 14), and San Francisco (TBA), with the support of New York Women in Film and Television. A portion of proceeds from the screenings and VOD sales go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. To find screening info, go to The LuLu Sessionswebsite. - Diane Anderson-Minshall

8. Music: Betty Who The Movement

Remember the viral video of the flash mob who backed up the guy proposing to his now-fiancé at Home Depot that got you all teary at work? (If not, watch it below!) Remember how you were dancing along to the song, "Somebody Loves You"? As it turns out, the Australian musician, Betty Who, just signed a deal with RCA Records, and her EP, The Movement, is out on iTunes. Congratulations, you now have more music to run to. Or another pretty face to stare at. - Michelle Garcia

7. Art: Think Pink

We’ve always heard that pink is for girls, but how did it get to be that way? At the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, an exhibit of clothing, accessories, paintings, and illustrations examines the various meanings the color has taken on from the 18th century to the present. It includes a selection of dresses and accessories from the collection of the late philanthropist Evelyn Lauder, who chose pink as the symbolic color for breast cancer awareness efforts. The opening of “Think Pink” in October coincides with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the museum will be illuminated in pink all month long. The show opened this week and continues through May 26; there will be a gallery talk with fashion curator Michelle Finamore October 17. - Trudy Ring

6. DVD: Mermaids

In Mermaids, the adorkable Nikki finds her way on an all-female tackle football team, with her sights set on her tough-yet-sexy coach. Lady Pochoir is about a moment in the life of bike messenger/graffiti artist Yv, as two women set their sights on her. Both films were directed by award-winning filmmaker Petra Clever, and each film (in German with English subtitles) is little less than 40 minutes. The TLA DVD with both is titled just Mermaidsand is available October 8. - Michelle Garcia

5. Dance: SuicideGirls

I can’t be the only woman thrilled to hear that there’s a new SuicideGirls tour, and the performers are as hot as ever. After a six-year hiatus, the wildly popular Blackheart Burlesque tour returns this month, hosted by Katherine Suicide with super-hot SuicideGirls dancers Bambu, Bricksie, Maxxy, Priddy and Razzi. The tour will also feature choreography from world renowned instructor/dancer Manwe Sauls-Addison (who's worked with Beyonce and Lady Gaga) and reportedly features stripteases and dance pop tribute to Kill Bill, Game of Thrones, The Big Lebowski, Planet of the Apes, Dr. Who, and more. Oh and if you don’t know who the SuicideGirls are, toss your queer card in the drawer and go to the SuicideGirls website for a sexy education. Get a sneak peek from their rehearsals here, and find out when they’re in a city near you at BlackheartBurlesque. - Diane Anderson-Minshall

4. Kickstarter: Periodic Table of Pride Poster

Breaking Bad gave rise to a variety of periodic table memes, but artist Kara Bishop of Tucson may be the only person adapting the table to symbolize LGBT pride. Her colorful 24-by-36-inch Periodic Table of Pride poster pays tribute to the people, organizations, films, TV shows, and even magazines (including our sister publication The Advocate) that helped pave the path of progress for LGBT folks. She’s running a Kickstarter campaign to fund printing of the poster; minimum pledge is only $1, but for a contribution of $30 she’ll ship you a copy anywhere in the U.S., for $40 anywhere in the world. Find out more details here. The campaign goes through October 26. Trudy Ring

3. Blu-ray: Curse of Chucky

Chucky, the murderous doll that made playtime petrifying for a generation, is celebrating his 25th anniversary in style with a new chapter in his killer legacy. Curse of Chucky slashes onto Blu-ray and DVD October 8, with another delightfully deadly round of thrills, chills, and blood spills from the killer icon courtesy of gay director Don Mancini. The latest installment in the blood-soaked saga also includes a lesbian plot that that is too good to spoil here. Check out the trailer in the video below and snag a copy for yourself at Amazon. - Jase Peeples

2. VOD: Concussion

What’s more exciting that watching the biggest lesbian film of the year at the megaplex near you? Watching at home, with your sweetie, in bed, and now you can do that. Possibly for the first time, a major lesbian film is debuting in theaters and, via Wolfe Video, on demand the same day. First-time feature director Stacie Passon’s Concussion made big waves at LGBT film festivals throughout the summer. The film stars Deadwood’s Robin Weigert as a dissatisfied lesbian housewife who turns to sex work with female clients to fill the void. Think Luis Buñuel’s Belle de Jour meets Chantal Akerman’s Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles. Weigert is terrific in this beautifully shot film from producer Rose Troche (Go Fish). The stunning Maggie Siff costars. The red band trailer focuses on the affair between Weigert’s and Siff’s characters, but the movie is so much more than that. (Oh and read our larger feature on the film here.) — Tracy Gilchrist

1. Music: Lots of Love's "Its So Hard" Video

Jessica Fleischer (aka Lots of Love) has been playing music for years, from bedroom demos to small shows around Los Angeles. But now, with the release of her debut album, From the Start, under the new moniker, she’s got all eyes on her. Especially mine. In this new video for “It’s So Hard,” Lots of Love is adorbs and fun and flirty. She tells us the six characters in the video echo the sentiments of the song: “It’s so hard to pay attention” when “balancing six inner selves — a fair encapsulation of the struggle for a fully aware existence in our worlds.” Smart and beautiful? Right-o. Check her out on Facebook or her website and see for yourself. - Diane Anderson-Minshall
