In a few understated words, Mary J. Blige voiced her support of same-sex marriage equality in a video interview offstage at the Democratic National Convention.

Yetta Kurland, a civil rights attorney and host of radio’s Yetta Kurland Live!, asked the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul what she thought of the Democratic Party’s endorsement of same-sex marriage. Blige’s answer was simple.

“I think it’s wonderful. I think that people that support love – it’s amazing. It’s love.”

The matter-of-fact response is typical of the nine-time Grammy winner, who performed at the DNC Thursday night, opening with a cover of U2’s “One” followed by her hit song “Family Affair.”

A longtime ally of the LGBT community and actively involved in the Minority AIDS Project, Blige expressed her support in the same straightforward manner in a 2007 cover story in The Advocate.

“The majority of my fans are gay,” Blige said. “The majority of them are, and I have to really make sure that they know I’m paying attention to the fact that they support me, and I support them.”
