When you’re looking to watch a good lesbian kissing scene, SyFy might not be the first channel that pops into your head. But last night’s episode of Alphas shattered that stereotype – though the kiss in question might not have been the romantic setup you were looking for.
Alphas is a SyFy series in its second season about a group of people with superhuman abilities. In last night’s episode, “When Push Comes to Shove,” Alpha-gone-bad Nina (Laura Mennell), whose power is to mentally control others’ actions, tricks Rachel (Azita Ghanizada) into kissing her. Rachel’s powers give her super-heightened senses, and when one feeling is particularly intense, the others diminish.
Their uncomfortable hookup, therefore, isn’t exactly consensual and takes advantage of Rachel’s hypersensitive sense of touch, an important plot point in the development of the characters’ relationship. In an interview with AfterEllen, Ghanizada talks about how the scene is meant to be “horrifying” for her character.
“I think what happens a lot of the time is that shows wants to do these fun girl-on-girl kiss scenes and it can be gratuitous,” she said. “But ultimately when [Alphas] wanted to do it they wanted to make it a painful situation and I think it’s impactful in the way that it’s played out as far as character arcs and what happens between these two women.”
