The filmmakers behind Suzanne Collins’s viral trilogy The Hunger Games have announced that Jena Malone will have a role in the movie adaptation of the second book, Catching Fire, Deadline reports.
Malone has appeared on Law & Order and in the films Donnie Darko, Saved!, Pride & Prejudice and Into the Wild, among others. She made her Broadway debut in 2006 as part of the production Doubt. In the much-anticipated second movie of the Hunger Games trilogy, Malone will play Johanna Mason, a young female victor chosen to participate in the quarter-century Quarter Quell.
Hunger Games fans have speculated about casting decisions for the second movie for months. Glee’s Naya Rivera repeatedly came up as a fan favorite for the role of Johanna, based partially on the character’s snarky similarity to Glee’s Santana.
In June, Rivera told Star, “I would love to play Johanna Mason. She's the axe-wielding ex-tribute and former winner. She's a grade-A badass!”
Malone will appear alongside Hunger Games stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth, as well as a slew of new actors who have yet to be announced. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will appear in theaters November 22, 2013.
