Awards season is in full swing since the Oscar nominations were announced this morning, and there are a few women in bisexual and gender bending roles who scored nominations.

For her passion project Albert Nobbs, Glenn Close, who plays a woman living as a man to survive in 19th century Britain, earned a best actress nod. Also nominated in the Best Actress category is Rooney Mara for her portrayal of brooding bisexual computer hacker extraordinaire Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Joining Mara and Close is Meryl Streep for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in out director Phyllida Lloyd’s The Iron Lady. The amazing Viola Davis scored a nod for The Help, as did Michelle Williams for My Week with Marilyn.

Close’s costar Janet McTeer, who plays a smoking hot woman passing as a man in Albert Nobbs, scored a nomination in the Best Supporting Actress category. Also nominated for best supporting are Octavia Spencer for The Help, the hilarious Melissa McCarthy for Bridesmaids, Bérénice Bejo for The Artist and the ubiquitous Jessica Chastain for The Help.

Despite Meryl Streep’s plug for Pariah during her Golden Globe’s speech Dee Rees’ film about a lesbian teen discovering her sexuality in homophobic household in Brooklyn failed to land any recognition from the Academy. Also absent from Oscar is the theme song “Lay Down Your Head” from Albert Nobbs with lyrics by Close and vocals by Sinead O’Connor. From her Globes nomination it also looked as though the ethereal Tilda Swinton would land a best actress nod for We Need to Talk About Kevin, but Oscar overlooked her.
