Tumblr Is Really Not Down With the Lack of Bisexual Acceptance on Faking It
The Tumblr community AKA the voice of our generation is pretty pissed at Faking It for continuing to dismiss bisexuality.
This whole thing started brewing during Season 1. In case you haven’t seen the show yet, Amy and Karma, lifelong BFFs, fake being a lesbian couple to gain popularity, which results in Amy discovering feelings for Karma, which reveals to her that she’s most definitely sexually confused. But that's not the message the show is sending.
The show chooses to only ever ask if Amy might be "a lesbian" instead of bisexual, queer or pan. For a show trying to be forward thinking, it approaches sexuality in a ironically narrow way. Especially since they keep introducing characters who could arguably identify as bisexual.
Season 2 of Faking It introduces us to the show’s second potentially bisexual character (the first being Amy): Reagan’s ex-girlfriend. This girl now dates a man, which apparently is grounds for serious emotional terrain for Reagan, since she feels like her ex “couldn't make up her mind,” and “isn’t a real lesbian.”
We’re going to call a spade a spade here because this does feel pretty narrow. Many lesbians have kissed, dated and fucked men, but that doesn’t mean “they aren’t real lesbians.” A woman dating a man after dating a woman also doesn’t mean that person can't make up their mind..
Going off the fact that these are high school seniors and college freshman we're talking about, it means they're probably sexually confused or bisexual. Or queer. Or pansexual.
But what’s with all the titles? Can we all just chill? Let them date whoever the fuck they feel like because they're incredibly young and don't need to stick to an identity yet if they don't want to.
