5 Reasons Lesbians and Gay Guys Should Date Bisexuals
It's a fact widely known in the bisexual community that lesbians and gay individuals often have, let's say, hesitations about dating bisexuals. A huge portion of the lesbian and gay communities say they simply will not date a bisexual — that being bi is some kind of deal breaker.
This is so well-recognized in the bi community that we kind of instinctively hide our bi-ness. Bisexual men often don't disclose their identity on Grindr for fear of it sending all the hot dudes in the opposite direction. Bisexual women avoid labeling themselves because it could mean the girl they've been crushing on all night chooses to go home with a fellow lesbian.
Here's the thing: obviously it is okay to have preferences in who you choose to date. We all do. I like funny feminists with lots of tattoos and a deep love for Netflix binge-ing. But choosing to not date bisexuals is not a preference; it's discriminatory.
So, to everyone in the lesbian and gay communities, please allow me a moment to give you a few reasons why, when it comes to your love life, you need to give bisexuals a chance:
1. We're in your club.
Sure, we're not an "L" or a "G", but we are in the LGBT world with you. You like people or your own gender? Awesome. So do we.
Ever like someone but then realize your dreams have been killed when they say they're straight? That won't ever happen with us. We're with you. You have a shot.
2. We're not inherently slutty/greedy/unfaithful.
The main concern seems to be that bisexuals are going to leave/cheat on their partners with someone of a different gender. For example, you're a lesbian and your bisexual girlfriend leaves you for a guy.
Yes, bisexuals have the ability to be attracted to more than one gender. That's kind of the definition.
No, it doesn't mean we're going to get bored with you and move on to something new and different. If someone's going to cheat on you, they're going to do it because they're an asshole, not because they're bisexual. We're no more likely to cheat on you than another lesbian/gay person is.
3. We have some awesome people on our team.
Ladies, you're telling me you wouldn't date Angelina Jolie, Megan Fox, Drew Barrymore, Bai Ling, Carrie Brownstein, Evan Rachel Wood, Amber Heard, orLady Gaga? Come on now.
And, men, you wanna tell me you wouldn't date Ezra Miller, Frank Ocean, Billie Joe Armstrong, or Alan Cumming? And you wouldn't go back in time to date Marlon Brando or James Dean? I call B.S.
4. Their bisexuality has nothing to do with your relationship.
In Arielle Scarcella's YouTube video "What Lesbians Think About Bisexuals," one of the women interviewed says "I don't like dick in or around my mouth, so if you do, that's a pretty big thing to disagree on."
Whoa, now. Ignoring all of the other things that are wrong with that statement, allow me to point out that it's really not that big of a thing to disagree on.
Politics? Religion? Children? Those are big things to disagree on. Those are relationship deal breakers. Dicks are not.
All that matters is that I like you. I am into you. I want to be with you. Who cares who I've been with in the past? It has nothing to do with our relationship and how it stands. If I want to be with you, I will be with you. End of story.
I would ask you to please not immediately write me off or diminish me based on who I have and have not slept with.
5. We're just people.
It's as simple as that.
Just like with every other community, some of us are great people who are totally relationship material. Some of us are not. But you have to give us a chance in order to find out.
