Bad Bunny Honors Slain Trans Woman on Jimmy Fallon, Wears Skirt
"They killed Alexa, not a man in a skirt."
Latin trap artist Bad Bunny proved himself to be an ally to the LGBTQ+ community during a performance of his new song "Ignorantes" on last night's episode of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
The native Puerto Rican wore a skirt during the performance of his song with Sech and around three minutes in, he opened up his blazer to reveal a shirt that reads, "Mataron a Alexa, no a un hombre con falda," which translates to, "They killed Alexa, not a man in a skirt."
Earlier this week, a homeless 29-year-old black trans woman named Neulisa Alexa Luciano Ruiz was harassed by a group of men yelling violent obscenities after using the bathroom at a McDonalds, which was recorded on video. In the clip, you can hear the sound of a gun being loaded and shots fired at Alexa as she walked away along with jeers that translated to, "We’re gonna run him over" and "You bet I am going to go and shoot him."
Reports believe Alexa was hunted and killed around 12 hours after the video went viral.
Bad Bunny's shirt is a direct call-out of how the Puerto Rican media misgendered Alexa in reports as well as police officers who reported that "a man dressed in a black skirt" had been killed.
\u201c'Alexa' was a transgender woman killed in Puerto Rico after social media posts accused her of peeping on people in a public bathroom. Police found no proof. The complainant didn't file charges after finding out Alexa was homeless. Despite that a narrative spread on social media.\u201d— David Begnaud (@David Begnaud) 1582593886
As Remezcla points out, Bad Bunny is at the height of his career and has a lot of influence in Puerto Rico as well as the rest of the world, so his allyship speaks volumes.
"With machismo, homophobia, and transphobia still rampant in Latinx culture—and so many others—Benito opted to, again, speak against systemic discrimination," they wrote. "And he did this while wearing a skirt."
