Pinterest is the gateway for all things creative and DIY...if you ever have all the supplies, time and effort required to actually complete anything you've pinned. Whether or not you ever actually complete a Pinterest project, the social network has now taken DIY to a new level with a customizable gender field. Earlier this week Pinterest launched not just additional choices for gender identification, but instead, a complete free field allowing everyone to identify however they please.
"So if descriptors “male” or “female” don’t quite work for you, you now have an option.
We hope this update helps everyone feel even more at home here on Pinterest!" said Tilde Pier, "Software Engiqueer
" on the Pinterest blog. Custom gender options open a world of possibilities for not only social media but for all websites, a key to showing consumers they are allies of the LGBT community.
Jamie Favazza, Pinterest spokeswoman told
Buzzfeed Life, "Internally, we've always had an inclusive culture, and we're constantly working on ways to bring that through in the product." This inclusive move from Pinterest follows similar upgrades to gender identification options from the likes of Facebook, Google+ and Twitter providing choices such as custom gender options and pronoun preferences.
