Sometimes being queer, a woman, and a person of color feels a lot like not existing. Much of queer media caters to gay white males, and these are the people you see as the face of the LGBT and queer movement. As a result, it’s often really hard to find accurate, authentic representation in mainstream media. It’s hard to find a sense of community within identity-based spaces. It’s hard to feel real, and valid. It’s hard to feel like you’re not alone.
In the spirit of community, we decided to compile a list of queer women of color, because it helps, at least a little, to have role models that are a little bit like you. Seeing yourself in the world is just sort of nice, and it helps us feel less alone.
Also, let us know who we missed by sharing favorite queer women of color with us! We know there are many more out there in the world, and we can’t wait to get to know them.
