One of the best conceits of the Prime Video dating series The One That Got Away is that the participants never really know who might walk — or sashay — back into their lives through “The Portal”.
For Jeff Perla, one of the biggest surprises to arrive from his past looking for love was a coworker and drag queen, Micah. The two met when Perla was hosting a drag brunch and was scouting queens to perform. Impressed by Micah’s splits, he hired him to perform.
While Perla admitted that he’d previously never seen his coworker in a romantic light before, he wanted to keep an open mind and see if maybe he was the, well, one who got away.
For their first date, Micah put some of his skills to the test by strutting out in full drag while performing a solo show just for Perla. It certainly made an impression. What did Perla think of their suitor’s big drag moment? Watch the clip below.
The One That Got Away follows six singles, including Perla ,who are opening up their hearts for love, but instead of trying to meet someone new, they’re looking back to the past — be it an ex, a friend, a coworker, or even just a missed connection. These suitors arrive one by one to take their shot. Sometimes the chemistry is instantly apparent, while other times things get very awkward, very quickly. But that’s exactly what makes the series such a fascinating experiment — not to mention a compelling watch.
The series is queer-inclusive, with Jeff’s potential romances playing out alongside his hetero participants’ while out musician Betty Who plays host and master of ceremonies for the experiment. So, yeah, there’s plenty for queer folks to love in the series.
The One That Got Away is streaming now on Prime Video.
