The film is from the writer/director of God's Own Country.

Who needs a male lead? Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan are playing each others’ love interests in their next movie.

The drama, Ammonite, comes from writer/director Francis Lee, who made a splash this year with his film God’s Own Country.

According to Deadline, Ammonite will “follow the unlikely romance between paleontologist Mary Anning and a London woman of means to whom she must unexpectedly play nursemaid.” It will be set in the 1840s small town UK.

Some people have called 2018 a popular year for lesbian films, citing Disobedience, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, and The Favourite as films featuring queer protagonists/romances that have at least touched the mainstream consciousness.

With Ronan and Winslet attached, Ammonite will likely do the same when it is eventually released (filming is currently slated for March).

(After all, it’s a period piece, stars well-known white women, is directed by a man, and features an age difference romance, so it’s practically sure to be a hit among film critics!)

But lez be honest, our queer cinema options are still limited, and Lee has proven himself to be a breakout talent (not to mention Kate! and Saoirse! and dinosaurs!) so we’ll definitely be seeing this one in theaters.
