Laverne Cox Wants You to Know Why She’s With Hillary
The new ad highlights the major LGBT issues at stake in this election.
"I would tell any of my friends that want to sit on the sidelines that your voice matters, your vote matters," says Laverne Cox in a new ad released by Hillary Clinton’s campaign on National Coming Out Day.
Laverne Cox is an Emmy-nominated actress best known for her role as a transgender inmate, Sophia Burset, on Orange is the New Black. She also focuses on transgender rights and prison reform as an activist and speaker.
In the ad, Cox lists the reasons she’s with Hillary — among them the discriminatory policies supported by the Republican Party, including North Carolina’s HB 2, the continual disenfranchisement of LGBT people, people of color, and working people, and the attempt to control women’s reproductive rights.
Cox then cites the many gains made for LGBT rights under the Obama administration, saying, "When transgender health care is covered in the Affordable Care Act, that affects people’s lives in a tangible way."
Her endorsement of Clinton also highlights some of the work the Democratic nominee has done for LGBT people during her career. "It was impossible to get a passport if you had not had gender reassignment surgery, and in 2010, Hillary Clinton’s State Department changed those rules."
Cox ends the video with a sobering reminder, declaring, "For me, she is the only candidate running for president who is really going to fight for us."
